(info from dramawiki)

  • Name: 張睿家 / Zhang Rui Jia
  • English name: Bryant Chang
  • Birthdate: 1985-Mar-31
  • Height: 180cm
  • Weight: 68kg
  • Star sign: Aries

I really don’t understand why this guy doesn’t have more popularity outside of Taiwan (there, he’s super-well-known, and he deserves it^^). He’s cute, he’s nice, he’s smart, and above all he’s talented! If you don’t believe me, go watch his two movies Eternal Summer (盛夏光年) and Summer’s Tail (夏天的尾巴). Eternal Summer was his first big movie; it was critically acclaimed, came to be a huge hit, and gave him the title “heartthrob” among many viewers. 😉 In the movie, his character is caught in a love triangle with his (male) best friend and a new female acquaintance who, through her appearance, causes the guys to become very confused about their feelings for her and for each other~~ I’ll admit, I’m not a particular fan of boy’s love, and Eternal Summer did have one very graphic scene, but it was done artistically and their acting (especially RuiJia’s!) just pulled me in completely. Here’s the MV for Eternal Summer’s theme song (under the link), which I thought really exemplified the confusion and painfulness inevitable in this particular love triangle.

Here’s also a nicely-made MV for Eternal Summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7CADYEM0wI

Summer’s Tail, with RuiJia and Taiwanese singer Enno, is equally artistic, but has a much more peaceful, idyllic sort of atmosphere. It’s a bit slow in starting, but once the ball gets rolling (literally–Dean Fujioka also stars as a sweet and academically challenged soccer player) I was pulled in once again. Instead of the intensity of Eternal Summer, it exudes a sense of gently portrayed reality, very unlike today’s idol dramas.

RuiJia actually won Best New Performer at the Golden Horse Awards in 2006 for his performance in Eternal Summer. (Clip of him accepting the award: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw72sOnTlbE).

He’s also best friends with Ariel Lin Yi Chen, one of my favorite actresses (yes, she is one of those few mainstreamers I mentioned that I like^^…not for the reasons most people do, though…but maybe I’ll post on that some other time). They belong to the same company and they’ve always been quite close. In fact, I love them as a couple, friend-couple or otherwise, which is why I’m so excited for Paper Rose, the drama he’ll be filming with Ariel!! =D See the photos below of the two (originally posted by sailorcat@AIFC).

So, go check him out! He’s a great actor and a really thoughtful, good person…oh, and you can read more about him and his future projects (he’s currently filming another movie) in the thread at AsianFanatics, here: http://asianfanatics.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=231937

  1. Hi, I agree with you totally. I have seen all of these drama serials in which Rui Jia has an acting role : 7th grade, Express Boy, Tokyo Juliet, and Love Express, as well as the movie Eternal Summer. Love his role and his personality. Go, Rui Jia !

  2. I have just finished watching Lover of Herb (Xiang Cao Lian Ren Guan), literally translated as Fragrant Grass Lovers’ Inn. It is quite a nice and heart-warming show ; the girl eventually decided to choose Duncan, who is more steadfast and self-sacrificial than her adopted brother and initial lover. Anyway, I had watched this 20-episode drama serial because of Rui Jia. Rui Jia’s role appears in Episode 17. Well worth watching ! Rui Jia was 19 years old in this 2004 drama serial.

  3. Lover of Herb? I haven’t watched it yet but since you recommended it I definitely will. =D Besides the obvious motivation of Rui Jia guest-starring, it sounds interesting. Thanks for the rec!^^
