霹靂MIT/Pi Li MIT Episode 16 Recap (finale)

My feelings for this drama have fluctuated, but I do love it. I’ll miss it, really. And I know people have criticized it for repetition, but once you get to the turning point episode 11, it takes off. I’ve also heard complaints about acting, but like the plot, it improves throughout. Overall…flawed but still captivating and fun. [Although there’s not much that can be done to salvage that title. Oh, my dear, dear scriptwriters (much beloved as you are after the masterpiece that was Bump Off Lover), other than “Mysterious Incredible Terminator,” could you think of something a little less…lame? >.< No offense! These are my favorite Taiwanese scriptwriters and crew, and I’m not in any way insulting them. I’m sure it’s the fault of bad English word choice, not their intent, in any case.]

Otherwise! Pi Li MIT was great fun and a great break from overacted romcoms (I usually like romcoms/dramedies, but the OTT acting is what gets me). And while it was no match for Bump Off Lover, it threw a few well-placed twists into the mix of mystery, romance, and comedy.

Currently watching the first episode. =D I’ll admit that upon first hearing the news that it would be another ArJoe collaboration, I was…less than overjoyed, lol. Ariel is one of my absolute favorite actresses, and I was concerned that yet another collaboration with Joe Cheng would limit her horizons (I don’t mean that *he* would limit her but that the coupling, repeated in quick succession, would be a career burden on both of them). But I’m not going to judge the drama because of that; after all, they are both talented actors and can create good chemistry. =) So I’m giving it a try.

I like the opening and endings songs (is the ending song by Ariel?!? it sounds like her but I’m not sure^^). Ariel and Joe seem to be acting well so far, and thank God their characters aren’t a XiangQin/ZhiShu repeat. But the cuts and editing are really choppy. It’s annoying. =_= They jump from scene to scene without transition, let a shot continue longer when it should end, end a shot when it should continue, and basically throw everything into an inconsistent pile. Well, maybe they were in a rush. Hopefully it’ll improve as time goes on~~

And I have to mention that it’s so weird to see Zhang Yu Chen (張毓晨) acting as Ariel’s friend. xD In True Love 18 (18歲的約定), Ariel’s first drama, she played Ariel’s teacher and love rival. 0_o Weird contrast. But interesting. Haha. It’s nice to see them collaborating again! I’m also looking forward to Rui Jia’s role. 😉

As for plot…we shall see. I think the biggest problem right now, though, is that editing. Way too distracting, and if it sticks out that much we won’t be able to enjoy the drama if it does turn out to be a good one. Directors, pleeease try to fix it~ =)

케세라, 세라 (Que Sera, Sera)

So upon finding a glowing recommendation (from dramabeans) for QSS, I tried watching it. Well, actually I’d glimpsed the first five minutes of it before, but got distracted and promptly forgot about it. After reading the plot description and skimming through a few MVs for it, I had pegged it as another one of those hot-looking-jerk-plus-cutesy-heroine classics. In my humble opinion the jerks have always looked more idiotic trying too hard to look good (*cough*DevilBesideYou: who honestly considers that mop sitting on Mike’s head as sexy? stylist, what have you DONE?), but they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. *sigh* Oh well. But I digress.

Back to QSS! I’m only on episode three, but I’m liking it a lot more than I expected. Tae Joo is indeed a confident jerkish player type, but he has more depth than cutesy drama counterparts. And I don’t mean the jerk with a heart of gold device that every scriptwriter feels the urge to throw in nowadays; if that concept was a sock it would be in shreds of cotton all over the entertainment world carpet. Screenwriter Do Hyun Jung doesn’t try too hard to make Tae Joo likeable, but instead portrays his flaws in a way that is fairly honest and yet doesn’t make viewers totally despise him (not yet at least, lol). And Eun Soo is definitely not the floppy female pushover I expected. She can be cute, but (as, I think, dramabeans/Sarah mentioned in one of her QSS recaps) it usually doesn’t feel forced. Most of the time, you feel her straightforwardness more than her cuteness. She’s naive but not weak, inexperienced but assertive. It’s cool. The secondary leads are also portrayed with firmness and sympathy (but not too much either way). I’ll have to see more of QSS to judge more.

And probably the thing that is winning me over to QSS right now…the OST. Love! Alex, Horan, Loveholic, it has them all, plus the non-OST songs that are sneaked (snuck?) into the drama through mall speakers and background radios. The music always blends with the atmosphere and I love almost every song. Very diversified.

I’ll keep watching. I shouldn’t have judged a book by its cover (but we all do that, lol), and I’m just glad I decided to give this another chance.^^

The Elusive 27-Minute IV-cos MV, “죽어도 갖지 못할 사랑”

I’ve been hunting for ages to find the full version of this music video–the previews are ubiquitous but the whole 27-minute deal is considerably more difficult to locate. Once I found it, I had to find a way to download it. That was another adventure in itself…certain Korean streaming sites make it particularly tough to get videos.^^ I tried one or two sites which claimed to have the answer (failed) and only got my hands on the flv after several hours using Mozilla’s handy file-sniffing Download Helper. So I converted the file and uploaded it to Youtube, where I know multiple people have been hunting for it. =) If you’re one of those people, enjoy! (The other two parts are beneath the cut.) EDIT: A d/l link was requested, so here it is^^: DOWNLOAD

The work was was worth it, seeing the MV! =) I admit my main motive in watching it was to see another Lee Soo Kyung (이수경) and Shin Dong Wook (신동욱) collaboration…their chemistry was amazing in the underrated MBC drama Soulmate, and they just didn’t have enough scenes there. They did have (SPOILER!) a very long kissing scene and several long crying scenes, plus a good bit of couple-interaction. Their acting, plus Baek Hyun’s acting (his jealous glances and twisted actions really made you hate his character, which means he did a good job, lol) were the main pull of the video. Well, the song was good, too, but it got a bit overshadowed by the immensely long video. 😉 Otherwise, however, the plot just annoyed me. A lot. (Warning: Prepare for rant.)

Zhang RuiJia/Bryant Chang/張睿家 (Taiwanese actor)

Zhang RuiJia/Bryant Chang (originally posted by sailorcat@AIFC)

(info from dramawiki)

  • Name: 張睿家 / Zhang Rui Jia
  • English name: Bryant Chang
  • Birthdate: 1985-Mar-31
  • Height: 180cm
  • Weight: 68kg
  • Star sign: Aries

I really don’t understand why this guy doesn’t have more popularity outside of Taiwan (there, he’s super-well-known, and he deserves it^^). He’s cute, he’s nice, he’s smart, and above all he’s talented! If you don’t believe me, go watch his two movies Eternal Summer (盛夏光年) and Summer’s Tail (夏天的尾巴). Eternal Summer was his first big movie; it was critically acclaimed, came to be a huge hit, and gave him the title “heartthrob” among many viewers. 😉 In the movie, his character is caught in a love triangle with his (male) best friend and a new female acquaintance who, through her appearance, causes the guys to become very confused about their feelings for her and for each other~~ I’ll admit, I’m not a particular fan of boy’s love, and Eternal Summer did have one very graphic scene, but it was done artistically and their acting (especially RuiJia’s!) just pulled me in completely. Here’s the MV for Eternal Summer’s theme song (under the link), which I thought really exemplified the confusion and painfulness inevitable in this particular love triangle.

atypical Asian entertainment (couldn’t finish the alliteration =P)

I have a blog! =D I feel so special.

Anyway, basically everything here will be on Asian drama/entertainment, so if you don’t like it, go away. ^_^ Just a friendly warning. Also, even if you like the Asian ent. world, don’t expect a focus on the “in-crowd” celebrities like Lee HyoRi, Rainie Yang, Matsumoto Jun, etc. (no offense meant to them–just examples).  As my blog is titled…I’m into everything that’s not popular but really deserves more attention than it gets. =) That’s not to say that I don’t like mainstreamers, but I’m more picky about them, and sometimes I like them for different reasons than you might expect.

Another warning…my blog will probably include some strong Taiwanese independence leanings. I’m half-Taiwanese, by the way, and set completely and utterly against *cough* the “Taiwan Province” theory. >.< No. Just…no. I won’t even begin to rant on that (bad start for a blog^^).

So, if you’re a visitor, feel free to look around (well, I don’t have much up yet, but you know what I mean). Thanks for coming! =D
